Oily skin? Here are 5 tips to keep your skin look and feel moisturised

Cleaner for Oily Skin

How to manage oily skin?

Choose the Right Cleanser for Oily Skin

The first step to any healthy skin care regimen starts with cleansing. Choose a cleanser that’s formulated for oily skin, and be sure to cleanse your skin using warm water twice a day—in the morning when you wake up and before going to bed.

Apply a Primer

Opt for a matting primer that helps reduce the appearance of shine. It’ll help your makeup go on smoother and keep excess oil at bay. Primers these days have some amazing ingredients that go beyond just aiding in makeup application. Look for one with antioxidant vitamins to help fight against free radicals.

Sunscreen Is Still a Must

No matter what, you can’t avoid sunscreen. While in the past it seemed like it was the number one enemy against oily skin, this is no longer the case. Sunscreens products have come a long way and now have improved dry-down times. Many are less oily, more matte and don’t leave that greasy, shiny after-feel. In fact, some have a nice, light powdery after-feel that works great on oily skin. For the sake of healthy, youthful skin, sunscreen is incredibly important. So, find the one that works best for you.

Don’t Over-Apply

Everyone struggles with determining the right amount of product to apply. Most of us can get away with about a dime size of product for our face, when it comes to our serums and day and night creams. Too much product can really add to the shine.

Here’s a quick tip to ensure you get the right amount of product and don’t overdo it. Apply five small dots of product, one each to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Then simply blend upwards and outwards: upwards to go against gravity and outwards all the way to your hairline. Let it dry. If after this step you feel an area needs a bit more product, then apply more only to that area. I apply it this way every day. For some reason I always need a bit more moisturiser on the left side of my forehead. I’m convinced this is the area of my face that’s most exposed to the sun when I’m driving, and therefore has suffered over the years.

Give Yourself a Clay Mask

Masking can be greatly beneficial when it comes to combating oily skin. It’s not something that you need to do every day, but once a week or so can provide wonderful benefits to your skin. Bentonite clay is my favourite type of clay, because it is known for its absorbing and toning properties. It will remove oil, dirt and dead skin. This helps to prevent pore clogging, which ultimately leads to breakouts. A good clay mask should help diminish the appearance of pore size as well.

More Tips to Help Manage Oily Skin

• Use an alcohol-free toner every morning and evening before bedtime to balance out your skin.
• Keep some blotting papers or powder on hand to help remove excess oil.
• Don’t apply too much or too many products. Look for a moisturiser or serum that contains SPF to avoid applying an additional layer.
• When it comes to cosmetics, always think about matting. Any help you can get to aid in oil absorption or to decrease a shiny appearance is a true benefit.
• There’s nothing wrong with oil on the skin. It definitely diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s only when we have too much oil that we start to look greasy, and that’s something we can remedy with the above tips.
