Nutrition Myths 🧐

‘Muscle weighs more than fat’

Perhaps the most common phrase we come across. But it’s WRONG!👎🏼

Think of it this way, a tonne or feathers weighs the same as a tonne of bricks. Although they weigh the same, they do differ in density (muscle has a higher density). So this means, 5lbs of fat will take up more space than 5bl of muscle.

‘Bread is bad for you’ 🍞

If I had a £1 for every time I’d heard this, let’s just say I’d be on my way to my Penthouse in Beverly Hills. Bread will not make you fat. Eating bread in excess however, will. But you can eat anything in excess and it will make you gain weight.

Bread can be a good source of carbohydrate and fibre which are both needed in a balanced diet ✅

Typically it’s what people put on bread that makes it unhealthy, e.g. jam or butter which are high in sugars and saturated fats.

‘All fats are bad’

Again, wrong. We need fat in our diets to aid nutrition absorption and maintenance of cell membrane. There are good fats and bad fats. The bad fats are the ones you want to avoid. Like your processed foods, takeaways and fried foods 🍔

But as mentioned, you need good fats in your diet such as the fats found in avocados, vegetable oils and nuts. Research has shown that these healthy fats actually contribute towards improved blood cholesterol levels and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

‘Skipping meals can help you lose weight’

A common misconception is that if I’m eating less, it’s better for me 🤷🏽‍♀️. But in reality, when you skip meals this causes your metabolism to slow down as your body has to compensate for the lack of foods.

When you next have a meal, you tend to go for a bigger portion, which results in over eating and causing greater calorie intake.

The best approach is to eat smaller, more frequent meals and snacks to keep your bloody sugar level regulated and to boost metabolism 👍🏼
